Woodbridge artist works to open Live Coal Gallery on Trumbull

Woodbridge is about to become a bit more Bohemian now that one of the neighborhood’s residents plans to open an art gallery there.

The Live Coal Gallery will open early next year in the first floor of a duplex on Trumbull Avenue near Warren Avenue. Yvette Rock envisions Live Coal Gallery serving as both a marketplace for local artists and as a museum of sorts for the work of Detroit’s creative class.

“It’s going to collect the work of aspiring, emerging and established artists,” says Rock, who has a bachelor’s in fine arts from Cooper Union and a masters in fine arts from the University of Michigan. She also occasionally teaches art in workshops at local schools and nonprofits.

She chose Woodbridge for her gallery because, even though the neighborhood is a thriving place for both art and creatively inclined professionals, other than CAID it lacks an active art gallery. She sees Live Coal Gallery as a vehicle that will add to the richness of the growing neighborhood.

“I want to find a way to foster art and community not just in Woodbridge but in Detroit,” Rock says. “I would like to inspire young people to pursue a career in the arts.”
