Hart Plaza redesign calls for demolition of Ford Auditorium, addition of amphitheater

Detroit has announced an ambitious plan for the redesign of Hart Plaza, calling for the demolition of Ford Auditorium, the addition of landscaping and the construction of an outdoor amphitheater. Officials estimate the cost to be $35-50 million and are exploring funding options.

"If it's the same plans I saw a few months ago, I liked it. It was thick with enhancements," said Jason Huvaere, owner of Paxahau, which promotes Movement: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival. "It would help our festival or anything else held there.

"Half the property down there is not being used. The Ford Auditorium is a coffin. Without that there you could add a few thousand more people."
