A new park that is envisioned to get daily use from area residents and visitors is planned for 2,000 square feet right next to the new YMCA and below the People Mover tracks.

“There will be benches for people to sit on, and a playground for toddlers to play in,” says Dan Meier, executive vice president of Association Advancement for the Y. The park will have late hours and will be open during the weekends. The Y will maintain the park and help raise funds to complete it.

The grand opening for the Y and the fund-raiser for the park are planned for Jan. 21, 2006. The event is called “Black Tie and Tennis Shoes,” Meier says, and will feature entertainment from local artists.  This is a celebration of what is uniquely Detroit, Meier says.
