“We want to create smaller events to support the community,” says Nina Payne, who has stepped into event management at Marygrove. “We want to invite professional people […] and show them how amazing this historic building is.”
TechTown’s Retail Boot Camp aims to strengthen local businesses by preparing entrepreneurs to open their brick-and-mortar stores in Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park. The intensive 12-week program has launched several businesses in neighborhood commercial districts.
"The Cody Calm Center is important because when COVID-19 hit Michigan, everything got shut down and teens had no place to socialize with each other or just get away from stressors at home," says young photographer Tymara Ware. The youth chose the space for her focus in a Voices of Youth project.

“Detroit is a very, very hard-working small business community,” says Build Institute’s Entrepreneur in Residence, Heather Levine. Having launched four successful food businesses, including Midtown’s Chartreuse, she would know. “I think it's also a very supportive small business community […] Everyone leans on each other.”
Cass Tech High School student Stephanie Haney says she hopes that through her photo essay, other youth gain the knowledge that "it's ok to take time for themselves and don't feel bad about that".
Young poet Aliryca Howell believes that a person only improves in life if they decide to take true steps forward in their own progress. It's part of the inspiration behind her moving contribution to our Voices of Youth project.
Located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, Build Institute aims to provide a nurturing environment for microentrepreneurs. As part of that supportive ecosystem, they’re launching a brand-new coworking space, providing professionals with resources, technology, and networking opportunities.
"I love Detroit but they need to get it together," says Voices of Youth participant Makayla Grice. "It’s amazing how downtown or dominantly white communities look so nice compared to the Black communities."
