Testify Communications brings mobile tech to nonprofits

Two things have played a prominent role in Lauren Hornes life recently. Bizdom, where she recently graduated from it entrepreneurial course, and her church. She has combined the two to create Testify Communications, a start-up that helps bring mobile technology and social media to churches and non-profits.

The Midtown-based start-up launched last June with a focus on bringing mobile technology to churches. Hornes noticed her church and others were still using thing like paper bulletins and in-service announcements to communicate and raise money. She started Testify Communications to help leverage social media and mobile technology, such as communicating and raising money through texting.

She started with one client and worked up to 50 by the end of the year, expanding her reach to include non-profits. The 1-person business is also starting to work with some bigger clients, such as the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce.

"It's pretty exciting because the buzz is starting to grow about what we do," Hornes says.

Testify Communications is preparing to launch a new platform this summer. Hornes hopes to expand her client list to 180 organizations and facilitate $5 million in transactions. She plans to leverage that growth to grow her team and let her company become a pillar of the community.

"I really want us to be a company that gives back to the community," Hornes says.
