Plans unveiled for Hamtramck Historical Museum

Plans for a Hamtramck Historical Museum were unveiled on Oct. 12, which also marked the ground-breaking for 93 new affordable homes in conjunction with the state of Michigan’s Cities of Promise program.

Michigan’s Cities of Promise is targeted at economically-distressed
smaller urban communities such as Hamtramck, Highland Park, Pontiac and
Benton Harbor. It focuses on five areas of the community’s economy:
housing, social and cultural, economic development, infrastructure and
a signature project.

The museum will be Hamtramck’s Cities of Promise signature project. Erik Tungate, Hamtramck’s Community and Economic Development Director, calls such a museum “past due.”

The museum, which will be located on Jos. Campau, will be funded by Community Development Block grant monies as well as by the Cities of Promise initiative, various foundations and from membership. Planning for such a facility has been in the works for years, with leadership coming from the city’s historical commission.

Tungate anticipates construction will take about a year and will cost approximately $285,000. He estimates the facility’s annual operating budget to be $25,000.
