According to the story:

Encouraged by the General Motors Corp.’s $500 million renovation of the riverfront complex, retailers are returning to the Ren Cen. It now has 60 retailers in new and renovated stores.

A growing roster of new retailers at the Renaissance Center includes a four-screen movie theater, Cherylynn’s Gold Crown Hallmark and restaurants such as Andiamo Riverfront and Seldom Blues.

A recent $132 million project at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center upgraded nearly 1,300 rooms and renovated the hotel’s restaurants and bars, lobbies, elevators and meeting spaces. The Renaissance Center also renovated its food court.

GM’s redevelopment of its waterfront world headquarters has helped drive projects downtown. Detroit has added more than two dozen restaurants since 2000 in addition to Comerica Park, Ford Field and other entertainment venues.

“We wanted … it to be a catalyst for development in the city,” said GM spokesman John M. McDonald. “The riverfront has come alive and there has been a lot of interest in people coming back to the core downtown area. We are proud to be a contributor to that.”
