MGM Grand breaks ground at permanent location

The casino is putting in pilings for an eight-story parking structure that will be part of its permanent casino and hotel complex at the Lodge Freeway, I-75 service drive and Third and Bagley avenues.

The 25-acre MGM site is the biggest parcel of land under construction in downtown Detroit since the building of Ford Field, which opened in 2002. Crews have been moving utilities to prepare for a 16-story, 400-room hotel and a casino with 100,000 square feet of gambling room.

MGM Grand is the first of the Detroit casinos to start building its permanent casino-hotel complex. And it is the only one starting from scratch.
