May 3, 8 p.m.
Last year — or was it 2011? — James Blake was the UK’s next big thing. His debut LP sold over 400,000 copies, quite a feat for a record more introspective and experimental than commercial in its intent. It also picked up Mercury, BRIT and Ivor Novello nominations, sent him around the world on tour, and brought him into contact with a wide array of fans and collaborators that includes not only Joni Mitchell but Jay-Z, Kanye West, Bon Iver, Björk, Drake, Brian Eno, and The RZA.
Falty DL (real name Drew Cyrus Lustman) cites Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Squarepusher and Weather Report as serious musical life-changing influences; he also loves club life, loves to dance, and considers hip hop, house, jungle and UK garage to be as important as any of those virtuoso musicians.
This is an adventurous live pairing, long overdo for Detroit music fans.
Check ’em out this Friday, May 3, at the Majestic, 4120 Woodward Ave. Doors at 8 p.m.
