Jazz festival draws rave reviews

The reconfigured and rejuvenated Detroit International Jazz Festival drew rave reviews from critics and fans.

"It's so good to come back home," [violinist Regina] Carter told the crowd that sprawled all around Campus Martius to hear her. "But it's nice to see how the festival has grown into the city. It's a beautiful thing."

A group of Swedish jazz fans came all the way from Stockholm to soak up the music at Detroit's jazz festival. Tom Megyessi, 62, and Lennart Sandsgoe, 68, are both bassists and particularly enjoyed Carter's bass player, Matthew Parrish.

"The bass is the heart of the band!" Megyessi said.

Sandsgoe, who was on his first visit to Detroit, was impressed with the city. "It's so beautiful here, with the buildings all around," he said, sweeping his hand past the Renaissance Center and the other skyscrapers looming around Campus Martius.
