Detroit Derby Girls like it rough

The Detroit Derby Girls have revived the rough and tumble sport of roller derby. And it is fun for the whole family.

Excerpt:

"You will see grandparents, punk-rock kids to the average Joe Smoe," says Ruby of Berkley. "We have to keep it somewhat PG-13. I see at least 50 to 100 kids every game. They will run up to you and ask for an autograph. When that happens I think to myself, 'This is why I do this.'"

But don't get it twisted, roller derby is real, adds Simone.

"This is a sport. The hits are real. Nothing is fake or rehearsed."

In one game Simone hurt her knee, her ankle and tore ligaments in her leg.

"I was back in six weeks," Simone says. "Nothing is going to keep me from coming back to the flat track."
