Local filmmaker brings Book-Cadillac story to big screen

Excerpts from the story:

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says his latest plan to redo the battered Book Cadillac Hotel is as solid as a bag of aging bagels and not just pie in the political sky.

But just in case this deal flakes or crumbles -- like so many other Book Cadillac comebacks -- you can always heat up some popcorn and watch the movie.

Actually, the movie is a 52-minute documentary called "Checking In: The Story of the Book Cadillac Hotel." It will be shown at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the Emagine Theater, 44425 W. 12 Mile, in Novi.

The theater will show other short films and music videos that night, too. Tickets are $7 and will be available at the box office on the day of the showing.

According to Frank Nemecek, the film's producer and director, "Checking In," examines why the Book Cadillac has received so much attention over the years and what its redevelopment would mean to people who live and work nearby.
