Bearclaw Coffee to open in downtown Detroit

Having seen sales double every year since its first Dexter store opened in June 2002, Bearclaw Coffee Co. is set to open five new locations before the end of this year, with Downtown Detroit being one of them.

First-time business owners, Debi and Doug Scroggins, put their 401(k) retirement funds and home equity on the line to open their first coffee hut in June 2002.  After purchasing the tiny store for $27,000, they spent $40,000 renovating it and turning it “into a log cabin and giving it a campy feel”, says the article.

With the store bringing in around $300,000 a year in gross sales, it is now ready to open stores in five more locations, with one of them in Downtown Detroit.
