Como’s Pizzeria plans location in downtown Detroit

Como’s Pizzeria Inc. plans to open a restaurant in downtown Detroit just south of Grand Circus Park.

Four years after buying a building on Woodward Avenue, Ferndale-based Como’s Pizzeria Inc. is moving forward with plans to open a restaurant in downtown Detroit just south of Grand Circus Park.

Como’s co-owner George Grego said construction began about six weeks ago and he is hoping to open the restaurant by December or January.

Como’s Detroit restaurant, at 1550 Woodward Ave., is to include a 4,000-square-foot first floor and a 2,000-square-foot deck on the second floor.

Super Bowl XL, Grego said, had little to do with his decision to move forward in Detroit.

“I have faith in the city, and I like the location,” Grego said, noting that it is within walking distance of Comerica Park, the Fox Theatre and other entertainment venues.

Como’s, which has been in Ferndale since 1946, is a popular Italian-American restaurant that serves entrees ranging from $8 to $24, as well as pizzas from $7.60 to $20.
