Lola’s jazzes up Harmonie Park with live music and unique dining
Lola’s, a new spot for eclectic dining and live music, opened recently in Harmonie Park, at 1427 Randolph.
Roger and Tonya Yopp opened the restaurant after recently moving back to Detroit from New York City. Roger has background as an engineer and a record producer. Tonya is an entertainment lawyer. They named the restaurant Lola’s after their favorite but now closed restaurant in NYC to “keep the spirit alive.”
When the couple decided to open a new restaurant they chose the Harmonie Park area for its history as a music center in the city.
“The location fit our needs,” says Phil Jones, chef and general manager.
Lola’s will feature live jazz and classical music on the weekends and special events, and they are seeking local forward-thinking musicians to perform “We are looking for musicians who bring something new to the table.”
In addition to music, Lola’s also displays pieces from local artist Gigi Bolden on the walls, and graffiti art by Shades in the restrooms.
The menu consists of what Jones calls “comfort food.” He takes classic dishes and adds personal twists, so the food is recognizable yet modern. He also offers international dishes including Thai, Caribbean, French and Italian.
Lola’s also has more than 100 wines to choose from, with approximately 40 wines available by the glass. On Friday’s, they offer a special happy hour where they tie three wines or cocktails together with specialty food items.
Their hours are Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. In a couple of weeks they will also be open for Sunday brunch, and will stay open Thursday through Saturday until 4 a.m. for food.
