Detroit to get another major first-run movie theater

Less than five years ago, Detroiters had very few options if they wanted to catch a newly released movie in the city limits. But in just the last several months, it’s been announced that two major theater companies will open locations here.

Earlier this month, Crain’s Detroit Business reported that Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, an Austin, Texas-based theater chain, bought a site near Woodward and MLK where they plan to open a 900-seat theater. Alamo, which has theaters in over 20 American cities, is known for serving beer and food at your seat. 

“Construction on the 44,000-square-foot building is expected to begin by the end of the year, with the theater opening in the first quarter of 2020,” writes Kirk Pinho. 

The project has a projected cost of about $13 million. 

In February this year, Emagine Theaters announced they would be opening a theater in Detroit as well, though a location has yet to be determined. It’s expected to be 10 to 12 screens, located somewhere in Midtown or downtown, and open in early 2020.
