The opening of the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel on Oct. 7 was a crowning moment for Detroit. The $190 million restoration was once the most glamorous of downtown hotels -- and more recently, one of its blighted structures.
Westin's 453 hotel rooms are expected to begin hosting overnight guests on Oct. 8, and the Motor Bar is already serving from its second floor perch over Michigan Avenue. The Westin-operated Boulevard Room Restaurant also is open, to be joined by Chef Michael Symon's Roast on Oct. 21.
The Gourmet Grab and Go coffee shop will open on Nov. 1, and the gift shop and business center open Oct. 10. The fitness center and pool are already complete, as are 13 business meeting rooms and the Venetian and Crystal Ballrooms.
As for the condominiums atop the hotel, 54 of 64 have sold, with the first resident moved in and is already calling the Book Cadillac home. Director of sales Scott Stinebaugh says that more closings are scheduled over the next four to six weeks.
Stinebaugh calls the entire project a "beacon of light" for the city. "We look at the opening as a part of Detroit's next chapter," he says.
