Third phase of Woodward streetscape project breaks ground in Midtown

Work has begun on the streetscaping project along the stretch of Woodward from Mack to I-75.

woodward02-300.jpgThe University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) of Midtown started work on the third phase of its streetscape project Oct. 26. The $3.3 million to fund the project came from the Detroit Growth Corp., the Hudson-Webber Foundation, Michigan Economic Development Corp. and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act.

The goal of the streetscaping is to make the area more pedestrian-friendly and attract business, as well as complement other development.  The area will get new lighting with historic fixtures, well-designed trash receptacles, repaired sidewalks with decorative paving treatments and flowering trees.

“With the continued development that has been sparked by the streetscape, the neighborhood is coming back to life with new residents and visitors to the area,” says Annmarie Borucki, grant manager for UCCA.

The third phase should be finished by next spring. UCCA is currently raising funds for the fourth and final phase to be completed next year.
