Doc on 1970s cult-commune ‘Source Family’ screens at DFT

Detroit Film Theatre

June 9, 4 p.m.

The Source Family was a radical experiment in 1970’s utopian living. Their outlandish lifestyle, celebrity hangout restaurant, rock band, and beautiful women made them the darlings of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip; but their outsider ideals and controversial spiritual leader, Father Yod, along with his 13 wives, instigated local authorities.

This treasure trove of interviews with never-before-seen home movies, photographs, and original music created by the Source Family themselves provides an unparalleled insider’s view into the cult/commune phenomenon and wildly outside-the-box social experimentation of the early 1970s.

Screens 4 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at the Detroit Film Theatre in the DIA, 5200 Woodward Ave., Midtown’s Cultural Center. Sunday

Also Sunday, at 7 p.m.: A Tribute to Ron Asheton featuring Iggy Pop and the Stooges. Highly recommended.

The films are part of the Cinetopia Film Festival. More info here.
