Super Bowl makeover reaches 11th hour
With just about a month until kickoff at Ford Field on Feb. 5, the city of Detroit has completed many of the downtown makeover projects it mapped out three years ago.
Excerpts from the article:
“I’ve seen some of the transformation, even in the six months I’ve been here,” said Brad Frost, 24, who moved from Washington, D.C., for his job at United Way and lives downtown. “The people who do live downtown are really passionate and really enjoy the environment.”
The “Super Bowl is a catalyst,” said George Jackson, president of the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. “It gave us a sense of urgency. It also forced us to work together. Public sector, private sector, and the foundation community all contributed to the success of what’s going on.”
“We cannot rebuild the city in 36 months,” Jackson said. “But I can’t tell you how happy I am when I hear people say, ‘Man, what a transformation. Downtown looks good.’ It’s really made an impact.”
