The Martin Luther King, Jr. marching band is nearing the $240,000 they must raise to play in the opening ceremony for the Olympics in Beijing.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. marching band is nearing the $240,000 they
must raise to play in the opening ceremony for the Olympics in Beijing.

On Wednesday, Detroit Lion Edwin Mulitalo will present a
$10,000 check from his Big Ed’s Band Foundation, putting their total at just over $200,000.

The
band is the only one in Michigan invited by Music Celebrations
International, an organization that promotes musicianship around the
globe, to perform at the event. The organization invited one band from
each state to play in China July 1-7.

The $75,000 gift from The Skillman
Foundation, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the
Kresge Foundation will help send more than 75 students to China.
