Wayne State University is encouraging Midtown developers to offer
incentives for its employers that are looking to move into the
neighborhood. Currently, 413 units in 21 properties offer discounts of
some kind.

“We want our 9,000 faculty and staff to live in Midtown,” said Francine
Wunder, director of corporate and public affairs for WSU, Detroit’s
eighth-largest employer.
Wayne State’s move comes as several colleges and universities in the
nation are taking a more active role in encouraging homeownership in
their communities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
even operates an office that helps universities form partnerships with
their communities.
