Border cinema: Detroit-Windsor fest features premieres and workshops

For the third consecutive year, the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival (DWIFF) features the newest and most diverse voices of independent film from around the world in a first-class international forum. This year’s festival runs starts this Thursday June 23 and runs through Sunday, June 27 at Midtown Detroit’s Wayne State University.
The Detroit Windsor International Film Festival is presented by Wayne County EDGE and ReelWC.
The opening film is Grown in
Detroit, a documentary about how urban agriculture can help a generation of teenage mothers (and their children) learn new sustainable skills. The film screens on Thursday, June 24, at 7:30 at WSU’s McGregor Hall. There is a pre-screening reception at 5:30 p.m.
Throughout the weekend, there will also be a panel with the producers of Machine Gun Preacher, now filming in Michigan and starring Gerard Butler; introduction to the nuts and bolts of producing with local filmmaker Chuck Cirgenski; the Secrets of Guerilla Filmmaking with Connie Mangilin; special F/X makeup with Keith Faychek and other events and workshops.
