This year’s festival welcomed the return of the Detroit Institute of Arts, and attendees could build their own kites at a kite creation tent and fix broken kites at a kite repair tent.
Model D sat down with the three couples featured in the Detroit series of the reality TV show "Love & Marriage". For creator and producer, Carlos King, filming in Detroit is a hometown triumph: "I knew the world would be interested in seeing what the new Detroit looks like and these three couples represent that effort."
“We want to create smaller events to support the community,” says Nina Payne, who has stepped into event management at Marygrove. “We want to invite professional people […] and show them how amazing this historic building is.”
The winning design from Pensole Lewis students Rodney Banks and Angel Buckens features the Detroit skyline and a Pepsi globe for seating to serve as a space for creativity and empowerment.
Marygrove teacher Bayan Founas sees what impact writing icons have when they visit students: “It allows youth in Detroit to see and hear what is possible for them...” This year’s lineup for the school’s long-running author series on April 28 is as impressive as ever.
"Don't feel like it's not a space for you, because there is," advises Lauren "Lo" McGrier, who manages popular music venue El Club, as well as Detroit hip-hop talent. "You deserve to be in that room just as much as that other person..."
“My passion is giving back to the community that raised me,” Robbie Walker says of her new role as the Director of Operations and Strategy at Marygrove. Alongside Turkessa Baldridge, who has been promoted to Director of Programs and External Engagement, the team have big plans for the future of the campus.
