Trained in Detroit: Singer-songwriter Alex Winston pops in for a night at Magic Stick

Magic Stick

Jan. 17, 8 p.m.

Alex Winston is a singer/songwriter/guitarist raised in metro Detroit and nurtured on the globally rich Detroit music scene.

Classically trained in opera, her influences seem to come more from Little Richard, the Beach Boys and the Cardigans than Verdi and Vivaldi. Winston’s sound is a mixture of classic and new styles. She’s is currently working on her debut album with the Knocks in New York, where she’s re-located. But don’t hold that against her. We like that mask, by the way.

Check out Alex Winston this Monday, Jan. 17, 8 p.m., at the Magic Stick (4120 Woodward Ave., Midtown Detroit). $7 gets all ages in the door.
