New overpass serves as gateway to Detroit

The $58 million project will welcome visitors as they enter the city from Metro Airport.

According to the story:

The Gateway to Detroit Bridge has opened up along I-94.

The overpass has been under construction since spring 2004, and the counterpart is called the Tied Arch Bridge. The towering, blue steel structure has been duplicated on a smaller scale in other states.

Gloria Jeff, director of MDOT, says, “This is not only the largest, but this is the only on the through which traffic actually moves.  The others that are in place in Indiana and Illinois actually have traffic going alongside of them.”

The $58 million project will improve traffic flow, she says. About 130,000 vehicles pass through the area daily.
