Detroit Labs grows to 15 as it preps for Madison move

Last spring, four of Metro Detroit's brightest young tech entrepreneurs formed Detroit Labs, a Detroit Venture Partners-backed start-up specializing in Internet and mobile app development.

Today that start-up has grown to 15 employees, two interns and a periodic independent contractor. It's gearing up to move from its temporary work space in the Compuware Building to the newly refurbished Madison Building overlooking Grand Circus Park.

"We keep getting more clients," says Paul Glomski, CEO of Detroit Labs. "We hire people as we grow our book of business."

Most of those hires have been software engineers. They are making apps and consulting for the likes of Stryker Medical and Quicken Loans, along with a raft of smaller start-ups looking for a better mobile presence.

"A year from now we would like to be double or triple the size we are now in terms of people," Glomski says. "In terms of impact we think we could be magnitudes larger than we are now."

Detroit Labs is a key player on Dan Gilbert's Webward vision of creating a tech-based hub of entrepreneurs in the lower Woodward corridor between Campus Martius and Grand Circus Park. Glomski believes Detroit Labs will be a significant player in attracting the type of entrepreneurial tech talent to create such a Silicon Valley atmosphere in downtown Detroit.
