This is part of a series supported by Marygrove Conservancy that will showcase the work the nonprofit organization is doing to preserve the legacy of Marygrove College and how it is serving Northwest Detroit and the city overall.

“We want to create smaller events to support the community,” says Nina Payne, who has stepped into event management at Marygrove. “We want to invite professional people […] and show them how amazing this historic building is.”
Marygrove teacher Bayan Founas sees what impact writing icons have when they visit students: “It allows youth in Detroit to see and hear what is possible for them...” This year’s lineup for the school’s long-running author series on April 28 is as impressive as ever.
How can engineers design for a more equitable community? It's these kinds of questions students at Marygrove are tackling as part of the powerful internship program.
“My passion is giving back to the community that raised me,” Robbie Walker says of her new role as the Director of Operations and Strategy at Marygrove. Alongside Turkessa Baldridge, who has been promoted to Director of Programs and External Engagement, the team have big plans for the future of the campus.
A small-business conference at Marygrove Conservancy, designed to educate and uplift Detroit's boom of new entrepreneurs, comes with a chance for a $5,000 business grant.
In its second school year, the Marygrove Early Education Center works to provide a holistic educational experience for students, teachers, and families. Its state-of-the-art facility, designed in collaboration with its surrounding community, recently received international recognition. Model D's team spent an afternoon learning how this award-winning center is creating an innovative model for early education.
All eyes are on the first senior class at Marygrove High School this year, and the students are taking it in stride. “It means a lot to be the first graduating class because we are role models, we can set bars for the little ones to surpass by the time they graduate,” says senior Jalisa Smith.
"I think a lot of times when we put kids in kindergarten, we box them in; ‘you gotta do this’, ‘you gotta do that’," says Lisa Williams, the new principal of The School at Marygrove. Here's what she plans to do differently with their elementary program.
The first major public event for Marygrove Conservancy in two years will run from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on August 13, featuring local live entertainment, campus tours, and free food for the first 500 guests.
