Kidspace Montessori expands, relocates to Burton

Kidspace Montessori now occupies 8,000 square feet of the former Burton International School on Cass Ave. The move from the old Wayne County Building gives the childcare operation an additional 2,000 square feet of space. “Our classrooms are a lot bigger here, and we have a gym and a library,” says executive director Jennifer Allen. There are 47 children currently enrolled and, in its current configuration, the school can accommodate up to 64.

Kidspace accepts children from six weeks to eight years of age, with full-time Montessoui education offered through kindergarten. The ratio of children to teachers is one to four for infants and toddlers and one to eight for pre-schoolers and older. Allen says the children are treated as students from an early age. “Montessori focuses on choices, what they’re interested in,” she says. “The kids think they are playing, but they’re actually measuring, weighing, pouring.”

Allen says the move to Midtown has already benefited Kidspace. “In the first three weeks, we have nine new kids,” she says. “What’s cool about the school is that it’s diverse socioeconomically and culturally.”
