The descending national media, which for good or ill shapes public opinion in these matters, will savage Motown for all the wrong reasons. "Blighted urban landscape" and "deplorable weather" will be among the buzz phrases you will read and hear. What this means is that someone predisposed to the glitz and warmth of say, Miami, either slipped on the ice or was forced to take a limo ride past a row of boarded-up buildings on the way to an expensed dinner in the suburbs.
Which would be kind of missing the point, because Detroit is the most genuine of cities to have played host to the 40 Super Bowls. And like anything that is gritty, without pretense or unable to erect wholesale facades to cover its blemishes, Detroit isn't for mass consumption in the way that Las Vegas and even Times Square / 42nd Street have been Disney-ized for general tastes.
