Detroit-based Belgian newspaper going strong in its 9th decade

The Gazette van Detroit, America’s only Belgian newspaper, was founded in 1914 by a Flemish immigrant. It appeared headed for its demise until support poured in from the Belgian/Flemish expatriate communities, residents of Belgium and and the Flemish Media Ministry.

As donations first trickled, then flowed in from Belgium, the
Gazette van Detroit acquired a new look: a 16-page tabloid with a touch
of colour and a bit more pizzazz emerged in July 2006. The ancient equipment was ditched – one antique graphotype was
shipped to Belgium and donated to the newspaper museum in Antwerp – and
replaced with a modest but a state-of-the art computer configuration.
All of us went on the warpath to find writers, photographers,
advertisers, and, of course, readers.
