Determination with an Olde English ‘D’

Sun-Times writer Dave Hoekstra talks about the meaning of sports to a
city like Detroit with Willie Horton and Robert Porcher III.

Excerpt:

“The World Series means a lot to the city,” Horton said. “There’s job
problems but I walk around the park all the time and I see a lot of
people smiling. What happens then is people get involved with their
surroundings. Sports is a family.” …

In a sidebar, Hoekstra also praises Nemo’s in Corktown, and looks at the neighborhood’s redevelopment.

Sometimes you walk into a tavern and it seems like you have been
sitting there your entire life. Nemo’s Bar & Grill is that kind of
place. …

“Corktown never really went away,” said Pat Springstead, who owns
Nemo’s with his brother Timothy. “The Irish people stayed when we had
suburban flight in the ’60s and ’70s. Now, young people are moving in.
They’re building lofts and rehabbing older [Victorian] homes.”
