Free Press columnist Desiree Cooper writes: “If the high-profile,
big-ticket events don’t make you feel connected to the city, then maybe
its small treasures do.”

Free Press columnist Desiree Cooper writes:

“Even if you wrote off the city long ago, the zoo controversy has
reminded us all that we can’t write off our memories as easily. Our
childhoods are ensconced in the Arctic Ring of Life at the zoo, in the
Rivera Court at the Detroit Institute of Arts, in the Streets of Old
Detroit at the Detroit Historical Museum and in the aquarium on Belle
Isle.

“Now it’s time to put your money where your memories are. The council
behaved badly, but the blame game is over. Like the grumpy
Rumplestiltskin, it’s time to spin your outrage into gold.”
