With food, merriment and entertainment, all of Metro Detroit’s summer festivals are ready-made for family fun. But some often put children and children’s activities at the heart of the fair. Here are festivals families shouldn’t miss this summer:
• June 11: Ford Day Festival revisits the early 1900s and teaches fairgoers about Henry Ford. The special event at Nankin Mills includes a display of Antique Ford Car Club vehicles, old-fashioned games, crafts and a scavenger hunt. 1-5 p.m. Free, except $3/child at craft tent. Nankin Mills, Hines Drive, just east of Ann Arbor Trail, Westland. (734) 261-1990.
• July 9-10: The Country Fair celebrates bygone farm days with old-fashioned children’s games, horse-drawn hayrides and milking demonstrations. Kensington Metropark Farm Center, 2240 W. Buno Road, Milford. (248) 684-8632.
• July 14-16: Farmington Founder’s Festival offers families lots of choices. July 14 is Kids Day with special activities. Each day, visitors will enjoy arts and crafts, food, inflatables, Kid’s Zone, Teen Scenes, Battle of the Bands and other live family entertainment. 10 a.m.-10 p.m. At locations throughout downtown Farmington. • July 16-17: Civil War Weekend brings history to life. Kids can meet President Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, U.S. senator Jacob M. Howard and members of the 102nd, 5th and 29th U.S. Colored Troops, watch drill exercises, cooking displays and weapons demonstrations. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Free admission. $5 parking. Historic Fort Wayne, 6325 W. Jefferson Ave., Detroit. (313) 833-1805.
• Aug. 5-7: Dearborn Homecoming Festival features children’s art activities, carnival rides, entertainment, food, Nickelodeon Live Game Lab Show on Sunday and fireworks Saturday and Sunday evening. 7:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Aug. 5, 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Aug. 6-7. Ford Field, Monroe Street north of Michigan Avenue between Southfield Road and Outer Drive, Dearborn. (313) 943-2285.
• Sept. 2-6: Michigan Peach Festival celebrates peaches and the Romeo community with carnival rides, craft show, live entertainment and food. 10:30 a.m. children’s parade and 1:30 p.m. floral parade on Labor Day. Village of Romeo, (586) 752-4436.
