“Some of us have been attacked based on our political view,” Riya said. “We are a very small community and we should be united, not divided. We need to respect each other’s opinions and freedom of speech.”
The community’s growing influence is starting to get the institutional recognition it deserves. Beginning in October, a new exhibit exploring the Bengali diaspora will be on display at the Hamtramck Historical Museum.
“The whole neighborhood is full. People tell us they bought homes here just to be near the farm.”
