Hot Town
Detroit:
Get here while it’s hot. Fireworks. Sailing. Street festivals. Summer
in the city is in full swing. Check out Dave Krieger’s photos from
Bayview’s Regatta, the Freedom Festival fireworks and Comerica’s
Tastefest.
Summer in Detroit is in full swing. Yachts race on the Detroit River.
Fireworks light up the sky. Every week, streets swell with festivals,
fairs, music and more.
This week, photographer Dave Krieger delivers slices of summer in the city from three recent events.
• The
first highlights the Freedom Festival fireworks that light up the sky.
Spectators take them in from Hart Plaza, Belle Isle, Eastern Market and
Fort Wayne. Special thanks to Miller Canfield for the invitation to
their rooftop at 150 West Jefferson. The view’s not bad from up there.
• Second, Comerica’s
Tastefest brings music of all kinds — from Common to Blanche — to New
Center, as well as a host of Detroit restaurants sampling their food.
It’s considered by many to be the best block party in the city.
• Finally, a great place to spend summer days is at 91-year-old
Bayview Yacht Club in Jefferson East. The club hosted a Riverfest
Regatta recently, with three days of racing from 300 youth competitors.
Bayview features weekly yacht racing, sailing lessons for young and
old, social outings and more. It’s also the host of the Mackinac
Race.
