Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says the vacant waterfront Ford Auditorium should be demolished to make way for a music amphitheater.
The plan would cost about $50 million. George Jackson, president of the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., said officials need about $20 million more to fund the project.
Jackson said the plan would create a 3,000- to 4,000-seat amphitheater. It would be part of a broader effort to update and improve Hart Plaza and the Civic Center.
