UCCA looks to Midtown’s future
The University Cultural Center Association held their annual meeting Wednesday evening and almost 100 people attended to hear about UCCA’s agenda.
Excerpts from the story:
– The University Cultural Center Association held their annual meeting Wednesday evening at the Detroit Science Center.
– The UCCA is an organization that oversees the Midtown neighborhood (their definition of Midtown is I-94 to the north, the Lodge to the west, I-75 to the east and south), builds up the area’s infrastructure and helps to create an area that’s ripe for development.
– About 100 people attended the $40 per ticket event that included a presentation, food, drinks and schmoozing with some of the region’s “movers and shakers.”
– The UCCA touts Midtown as having 2 million annual visitors, 30,000 employees, 35,000 college students, 1.5 million patients at the Detroit Medical Center, 17,000 residents and 4,000 volunteers.
Among the goals on UCCA’s agenda:
-Build a brand identity for Midtown. The group unveiled a new logo for Midtown Detroit with a tag line that reads: Where life is art.
-UCCA is also entering the property development field. The group plans to build a three-story residential and commercial building at Woodward and Willis with a projected cost of $3.2 million.
-Develop a “greenway” circle to enhance the walking experience in the neighborhood, and add landscaping and historic lighting to Woodward.
-Raise at least $9 million additional dollars to support existing initiative throughout the next three years.
