The upper-floor apartments at the Hotel David Whitney have been converted into 79 condominiums.

What’s happening:

Residential apartments at the Hotel David Whitney are being converted into 79 condominiums, opening an opportunity for homeownership in one of Detroit’s architectural treasures.

Why it’s important:

The conversion marks the next chapter for the David Whitney Building, a structure that has stood at the gateway to Grand Circus Park since 1915. Designed by the Chicago architecture firm D.H. Burnham and Company, the David Whitney originally opened as a medical office and retail building. It fell into decline and closed in the late 1990s. In 2011, The Roxbury Group acquired the property and led a $94-million restoration. It reopened in 2014 as a mixed-use property that helped spark downtown Detroit’s boutique hospitality boom.

Who they are:

The Roxbury Group is a Detroit-based real estate development and investment firm specializing in transformative projects that preserve history while delivering modern design and lasting community impact. Since its founding, Roxbury has developed more than $300 million in projects, with $150 million currently in its pipeline. The firm’s portfolio includes some of Detroit’s most significant restorations and hospitality offerings, including the David Whitney, the Element Detroit at the Metropolitan, and the forthcoming AC Detroit at the Bonstelle.

What they’re saying:

“From the beginning, our vision for the David Whitney has been about honoring Detroit’s golden age of hospitality while creating something new for the city’s future,” says Stacy Fox, Principal of The Roxbury Group. “With these residences, we are extending that vision to offer buyers the chance to truly live in the city’s most storied address — complete with the services and lifestyle that make the Hotel David Whitney unique.”

Just for fun:

The public is invited to kick off the holiday season by lighting what the hosts claim is downtown Detroit’s largest indoor Christmas tree. The tree lighting is at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22. Standing at a height of 25-feet and decorated with over 10,350 lights, the tree is in the grandly restored Atrium of the Hotel David Whitney. Guests can sip on holiday-themed cocktails at the Library Bar or in the second-floor Gallery and enjoy live entertainment by Sasha Burshtein and the Madrigal Chorale. This family-friendly celebration has no admission fee.
