Back Alley Bikes in Midtown has expanded its purview to include a full-service bicycle shop. The nonprofit will continue to offer youth education programs under its Back Alley label, while the The Hub will sell and service bicycles and accessories.

Back Alley board member Ben Chodoroff says that an array of used bikes will be available, as well as new tires, tubes and brake pads. Future stock will include safety equipment such as helmets, and specialty parts can always be ordered.

“We want to fill what we consider to be a very dire need in the Detroit bicycle community,” he says.

With a March 1 soft opening, The Hub is still evolving; the collective has plans for a complete grand opening later in the spring when
construction is complete. “We still have lots of physical improvements to do, but we are accepting repairs,” says Chodoroff.

The Hub will be open Monday through Saturday. Back Alley and the Hub are located at 3535 Cass, the first alley west of Cass off of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
