More than 20 dining destinations in Southwest Detroit are celebrating a 10-day foodie festival, back for its third year following a pandemic pause. This year’s event will run through Sunday, Oct. 9. as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, and has become a social tool to increase awareness of diversity in Detroit.
In some less bumpy news coming out of Belle Isle, the renovated nature center has reopened with a free state-of-the-art facility offering new habitats, and programs designed for guests of all ages.
While Lucy Harrison educates others about a connection with the earth, she is the first to share that it is the plant world that has taught her how to grow a "three sisters" garden: "Their language is one of quiet observation." Model D photographer Rosa Maria Zamarron accompanied the Anishinaabe elder during harvest this year.
“I’m super excited to go into this digital art world, it’s the next level of art,” says artist El Cappy, whose “WARM” mural can be found on the side of The Scott development in Brush Park. “It’s definitely going to be the next big thing.”
To celebrate the 12th annual Detroit Month of Design, we caught up with some of the creative forces from last weekend’s MOCAD exhibition to learn about the Gucci Changemakers — and how young designers are using art to make a difference from Detroit to Los Angeles.
American Indian Health and Family Services is set to break ground on a new facility this year to serve Detroit’s urban Native community. The group held its annual powwow recently, after a two-year hiatus, at Romanowski Park in Southwest Detroit. Rosa María Zamarrón was there to capture the vibrant scene.
“The Covid-19 pandemic showed us the importance of safe, accessible green spaces in our neighborhoods,” says Rochelle Riley, Director of Arts and Culture for the City.
Hot off the heels of the popular immersive Vincent Van Gogh exhibit, Detroit will host an elaborate Gustav Klimt show in September and October. Music and animation will be used to augment projected displays to bring the viewer into the artist's world of water lilies, vibrant blooms, mermaids, and (of course) his famous golden phase that produced "The Kiss".
“These new stakeholders will help make us a sustainable organization in Detroit. We’re deeply grateful to all the organizations that believe in us, helping us become real players in the repository world of Detroit,” says Michelle Jahra McKinney, Executive Director of the DSC.
Written and directed by Sarah Shourd, who was once held as a political prisoner in Iran, and with many of its cast and crew survivors of solitary confinement, "The Box" sheds light on a concerning corner of incarceration in the U.S.
