SIGNAL-RETURN, a boutique for letterpress and print media, opened last week in Eastern Market.
The new business will operate a hand-operated Gutenberg-style printing press at 1345 Division St. That new operation will host visiting artists, curate exhibitions, offer workshops, manage a retail presence, and be available to the city as a resource for arts and crafts.
"I think a printing press is a gathering place for a variety of initiatives," says Megan O’Connell, director of
SIGNAL-RETURN.
SIGNAL-RETURN was inspired by other letterpress centers in the country, such as
Hatch Show Print in Nashville,
Dexter Sinister in New York City and
Art Center College of Design’s Archetype Press in Pasadena. It will produce a variety of creative pursuits, ranging from posters to fliers to training for future designers.
"It’s inviting the maker to think more broadly and deeply about the community," O’Connell says. "It forces us to slow down."
