March 13th — known locally as 313 Day — is Detroit’s unofficial holiday celebrating the city’s area code, culture, and community pride.
Whether you’re planning a romantic evening, a friends’ night out, or simply looking to experience something new, this Valentine’s Day weekend offers something for every mood.
KaTrice Perry leads the nonprofit Bridging Communities. She is passionate about helping Southwest Detroit seniors find services, housing support and personal connections.
"These Alebrijes are made from different car parts tying up our relationship with Detroit and our long-time contributions as a Latino community to the Motor City,” says artist Elton Monroy Durán.
Opening doors, bridging connections and walking entrepreneurs through the litany of permits, regulations, and licensing, Southwest Detroit Business Association supports small business owners in their quest to succeed.
Revelers of all ages at the annual parade in Southwest Detroit weren't deterred by a little rain this year. Photographer Rosa María Zamarrón was on hand to capture the bright moments.
"There are a lot of youth in Southwest Detroit that need leadership development," says Fabiola Venegas. "The space is like a second home to them. It helps them feel like, 'Yes, you can get an education after high school. Or, yes, you can do something outside for the community, like the garden."
For Southwest Detroit residents struggling with high rents, this new development offers new possibilities.
A long-vacant block along an otherwise bustling Vernor Highway will soon become site to La Joya Gardens, a mixed-use development featuring retail and residential space.
