Research Lofts blends history and function in Detroit’s New Center

The building that is now the Research Lofts, just north of Woodbridge, is where the roofing nail was invented. Now, they are semi-raw, sharp (like a roofing nail) living spaces.Excerpt:Research Lofts is truly one of the great things happening in Detroit. Fox and Biggar restored this 1904 nail factory to historic standards, earning it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places as the location that the roofing nail was invented. Better still, they cleaned up the surrounding blight and created an attractive, functional project. It includes 38 unique lofts, each one with design elements that incorporate past and present. Among them, oversized historic replication windows, granite countertops, floor-to-ceiling (original) concrete beams, original brick walls and lots of other must-see features.
