When Jason Johnson started his Midtown business, he had no idea the sneaker industry was about to take off. Now the owner of Detroit's iconic Bob’s Classic Kicks store is surviving COVID-19 challenges with a bit of help from his community.
“I feel like if you’re going to represent somewhere or something, it should be done right. Good Vybz is a representation of where I’m from. People are coming from all over to see it, taste it. So proper representation is a very big thing for me,” says Good Vybz co-owner Anthony Harriott.
“Our projects aren’t temporary. These aren’t placeholders for future development, where four- and five-story buildings will be built one day,” says Daniel A. Washington, founder and executive director of NW Goldberg Cares. “These parks are becoming part of the DNA of our neighborhood.”
Krista McClure has been bringing metro Detroit parents together since 2017 in her family-friendly, coworking space on West McNichols Road. Now, the owner of Detroit Parent Collective sees a chance to grow, and to double down on the inclusivity she set out to achieve.
Funded by the Downtown Detroit Partnership and the DTE Energy Foundation, The Detroit Sign is a roving landmark that will travel from neighborhood to neighborhood, encouraging people to get out of their cars, onto the sidewalks, and, hopefully, into the small businesses of Detroit’s neighborhood commercial corridors.
In recent years, the riverfront has undergone a dramatic transformation, with the redevelopment of the former Globe Building for the Michigan DNR Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC), improvements to spaces like Milliken State Park, and the opening of Robert C. Valade Park.
Through a partnership with the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, an equitable development scorecard is under development and will be used to determine what gets built at 14th and Dalzelle.
As part of the Southwest Detroit Business Association’s Phase 1 rollout of the luminarias, local restaurants Armando’s and El Asador Steakhouse recently opened their luminarias to customers, with a total of 15 luminarias planned to debut in the coming weeks and an average of three luminarias at each restaurant.
You've likely seen Tytiana "Ty" Steele's work without realizing it. The set designer and director is behind sumptuous scenes in TV shows like "Queen of the South" and brand campaigns like Barefoot Wine's We Stan with Her, but now the Detroit artist is bringing her talent back to her hometown, starting her own company to help build equity in her industry.
“We want to be involved in the communities our businesses are in,” says Shalyn Getz, president of Eastern Market Brewing Company and the Ferndale Project. “It’s super important to give back to the communities where we work.”
