"When a school building closes, in many ways that becomes a dagger to the heart of hope for a community," says Chris Lambert, founder and CEO of Life Remodeled. "And schools don’t close overnight, but rather as the result of decades of disinvestment, which in Detroit, is directly linked to issues of systemic racism."
When Ukrainian American photographer and graphic designer Michael Hnatiuk attended a protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, held at Hart Plaza on Sunday, he was amazed at the strength and support displayed. Here he shares why this conflict feels like history repeating for his family, and what he's witnessed from the Detroit community.
The COVID-19 pandemic has raised awareness about how Michigan communities can bridge gaps in care and improve quality of life for older residents.
For nearly two decades, Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) has delivered SNAP-Ed programming in area schools to encourage students and families to eat more fruits and vegetables and engage in more physical activity.
"As communities, we have a big task to fill what's been lost for students in the pandemic," says Andrea Meyer, executive director for the Center for Success Network. "I’m inspired by our mentors, this huge network of people who give up their time and talent to be with our amazing kids. They're all saying, this is important, we need to do this, and they're willing to ask, how can we do this together?"
Student leaders in the Detroit Public Schools Community District are helping design and implement SNAP-Ed funded Rec-Connect™ programming, which promotes physical activity.
“The goal of this project is to open The Blue Bird Inn once again as a neighborhood hearth for the community,” says DSC Director of Operations, Jonah Raduns-Silverstein. “The Bird will serve three main uses: as a music venue, gathering space and cultural education center and archive. All uses will be welcoming, accessible and intergenerational with an emphasis on preserving our heritage for an innovative collaborative future.”

"Soon, we plan to be able to deliver a curated and equitable mix of everything we get on a daily basis to everyone we serve," says Kirk Mayes, CEO of Forgotten Harvest. "Through our new data-based approach, we hope to provide families with not just a part of the solution, but the whole solution. For us, this means there's a healthy, nutritious, wholesome meal that actually quenches the thirst of hunger."
