Opens Jan. 27, various

In a ruthless battle for power — key word, ruthless — several Japanese gangster crews (yakuza) are competing for the favor of a crime family leader in the Japanese underworld. The rival bosses seek to rise through the ranks by scheming and making allegiances sworn over ever present bottles of saké. Naturally, long-time yakuza Otomo (played by brilliantly droll actor/director Takeshi ‘Beat’ Kitano) is in the middle of it all. In Japanese with English subtitles. This film is not recommended for persons under 18. It’s 112 minutes in length. Purchase tickets here.

At the Detroit Film Theatre (inside the Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Ave. in Midtown’s Cultural Center), Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.

The DFT is accessed through the John R entrance to the museum.
