5 Elements Gallery

Nov. 14, 11 p.m. – 4 a.m.

If Frank Raines of the world famous Funk Night crew — which includes Brad Hales of Peoples Records and more recently, the Will Sessions Big Band — is doing something that involves 7-inch platters spinning round and round and producing sexy, monophonic (or stereo; we’ll take it) rhythms and sound, we’re all over it.

Raines’ newest Detroit-based groove thang is hosting a night of dubbed-out sounds straight out of Kingston, mon. Featuring great tunes by the likes of King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Joe Gibbs and other great studio artists past and present, the night is called Original Rockers and promises to come straight at you from the low end this Saturday at 5 Elements Gallery in Corktown.

5 Elements got on the Detroit music destination map for its steady stream of hip-hop nights, including showcases featuring some of the best female rappers, emcees and DJs in the city. Colorful graffiti covers the gallery’s exterior and owner-promoter DJ Sicari allows local artists from different crews to compete over space on the wall behind.

Original Rockers is Nov. 14, 11 p.m.- 4 a.m. 5 Elements Gallery is at 2125 Michigan Avenue, in Detroit’s Corktown.
