Movement moves in review

We were there. You were there. It seemed like the whole world was there to dance the weekend away at Hart Plaza. OK, we exaggerate. Only about 107,000 people were there (a new record, by the way). So was video producer Jacob Mendel.

One of the biggest, if not the biggest, dance parties mostly on concrete ended last weekend with a record turnout. DJs and electronic music producers from around the world played before kids attending their first Movement festival and experienced techno and house heads who started banging in the 1980s.

And not just techno and house aficionados, but a good part of the hip hop nation that was nurtured in the same decade by super groups like Public Enemy — which played the festival for the first time — turned out at Hart Plaza as well.

There were highlights galore: Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Mike Huckaby, Derek Plaslaiko, Little Louis — and newcomers like Actress and FaltyDL.

Jacob Mendel brought his camera and shot the whole thing in 3D. Since we can’t give you a pair of glasses to watch video on Model D we present a three-minute excerpt in 2D. The music is by SND, which didn’t actually play Movement, but supply an appropriately frenetic and crispy backing to the moving pictures. Thanks Jacob. Enjoy, everyone.
