Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

Dec. 12-19, opening 7 p.m.

Deck the halls with decks, we say. Technics 1200s, preferred. Now in its 10th year, famed turntablist, video and performance artist Christian Marclay’s The Sounds of Christmas project is made up of 1,200 holiday LPs put on public display and shared with local DJs for special events. The installation opens this Saturday at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) and includes six videos, which document the album covers, while a video projector shows documentation of past performances at other venues. The installation has appeared at the Tate Modern (London), Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (Geneva), Museum of Contemporary Art (Miami), DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art (Montreal) and The New Museum of Contemporary Art/Media ZLounge (NYC).

The schedule looks like this:
On Saturday, Dec. 12, 7 p.m., Christian Marclay and all performers for the series present a special one night improvisational performance;
Thurs. Dec. 17, 8 p.m., Jon Moshier and Ed Special present a wacky and bizarre collage of voice and sound; Friday, Dec. 18, 8 p.m., Ian Clark (aka Perspects of the Interdimensional Transmissions label) will create an atmospheric soundtrack for the museum space through the use of samplers and pitch control on the turntables; and on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m., Hamtramck sound artist Jeff Karolski will use everyday objects, samples and elements from his immediate environment to create new and strange environments of his own.
